Amy Christey, Chief of Police of Morro Bay, first woman ever to hold that position in the City of Morro Bay; formerly with Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office for 20 years rising through the ranks, eventually promoted to Lieutenant (second woman ever to hold that rank in the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office); as Bomb Technician, later Bomb Team Commander, trained extensively with the FBI and ATF dealing with security issues and explosive devices.

Dr. Rama K. Khalsa, Ph.D., former Director of Santa Cruz County Health Services; retired after a 26 year career with County Health during which she championed “Healthy Kids of Santa Cruz County”, part of an effort to provide universal health coverage for county children. In March 2012, she was honored as “Woman of the Year” at ceremonies in Sacramento at the State capitol.

Speier is nationally known for her passionate and compelling speeches on the House floor, such as her spontaneous response to a congressional colleague who trivialized women who - like her - have had medically necessary second trimester abortions. She routinely speaks on the House floor about men and women in our
armed forces who have been raped or sexually assaulted while in the line of duty. She has also taken a lead role in working with the veterans organizations to improve delivery of VA benefits to Bay Area veterans. In 2012 Newseek named Jackie to its list of 150 “fearless women” in the world.

Santa Clara Assistant District Attorney Rolanda Pierre-Dixon is an expert on domestic violence issues. She started the Santa Clara D.A.'s domestic violence unit in 1991 and has supervised that unit for over 17 years. Her commitment to domestic violence issues spans over 20 years. Currently she is the supervisor over the Family Violence Unit, Victim Witness Advocates, Criminal Issuing, and the Victim Restitution Unit. She is the Office liaison on Human Trafficking. Last year, Assemblymember Nora Campos (D-San José) honored Ms. Pierre-Dixon for her commitment to ending domestic violence in Santa Clara County at a ceremony held in the Assembly Chambers. Ms. Pierre-Dixon was honored for her tireless efforts to end and prevent domestic violence in Santa Clara County.

How education changed her life
Sara Clarenbach graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a BA, and from the University of California Berkeley School of Law with a JD, before arriving in Santa Cruz in 1974. She then practiced law here for 35 years, before turning her focus to the nonprofit sector in Watsonville as an advocate for a healthcare nonprofit, engaging the community and working in media relations. Sara now works with a national nonprofit supporting Hispanics and Native Americans in science. Sara comes from a family deeply rooted in the importance of education for women, and she has avidly supported scholarships for women throughout her career.

An Introduction to
Medical-Legal Partnerships
California leads the nation in the number of medical-legal partnership projects aimed at addressing patient care issues.
Under such partnerships, hospitals and community clinics add
lawyers to medical teams in an effort to help resolve issues associated with "social determinants of health," such as housing, poverty and domestic violence.

Valley Medical Center
Lee Anna Botkin is a pediatrician at the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, and is a co-founder and the current medical director of the Silicon Valley Medical Legal Partnership Clinic at SCVMC Pediatrics. Lee Anna’s medical practice focuses on the ambulatory care of pediatric patients from infancy through adolescence. She is a volunteer clinical instructor in the Department of Pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine, and teaches
medical students and residents. Lee Anna received her undergraduate degree from Harvard and Radcliffe Colleges with a concentration in History and Science, and received her medical training (MD, internship and pediatric residency) from
the University of California, San Francisco.
